UBC POCUS Fellowship – St. Paul’s Hospital
A unique clinically-integrated program designed to train the future leaders of point-of-care ultrasound designed specifically with CCFP-EM graduates in mind. Fellows will:
- develop technical expertise with advanced understanding of PoCUS applications within the context of emergency medicine
- learn effective educational strategies for teaching stereotactic and conceptual elements
- be well-versed in current research informing safe and effective PoCUS practice
- develop program management, quality assurance, and leadership skills
FELLOW INSTRUCTION AND EDUCATION
- Weekly coached hands-on scanning shifts with PoCUS faculty
- Weekly didactic session by PoCUS faculty with primarily “flipped classroom” focus
- Access to extensive curated online resources
- Flexible areas of concentration to develop targeted expertise
- Participation as instructors in several Hands-On courses for staff and residents
FELLOW RESPONSIBLITIES
- Guaranteed 0.5 FTE staff shifts in the ED at St. Paul’s Hospital paid at regular staff rates
- 2 weekly PoCUS scanning shifts in the emergency department
- Weekly quality assessment of PoCUS scans
- Quarterly PoCUS Journal Club: interactive discussion of foundational and cutting edge literature
- Participation in curriculum with topic selection and content curation
- One Grand Rounds presentation to Department of Emergency Medicine faculty and residents
- Scholarly project: prepare an original scholarly work suitable for peer review
ELIGIBILITY
- License to practice emergency medicine from the College of Physicians of BC
UNIQUELY ST. PAUL’S HOSPITAL
- A busy, inner-city referral ED in Downtown Vancouver
- Formally trained faculty in EM and POCUS
- 24/7 POCUS equipment and reference access
